New Scientist | 2002

August won the commission to redesign the Reed Business title New Scientist in 2002. The team of Nick Barley, Stephen Coates assisted by designer Ben Acornley worked closely with both editorial and design departments to fashion a magazine which not only looked more rational and modern but also delivered better headlines, standfirsts and captions.

The solution for the feature pages introduced the discipline of using an fixed grid of units either singly or in multiples to contain display type, panels of colour or as fixed hanging points for text or pictorial elements – or to introduce elements of controlled consistent space.
